Case Study - Arts - Chunky Move

Client

Chunky Move is Australia’s leading contemporary dance group. With high demand from audiences here and overseas, the company faced critical decisions regarding performance delivery, company structure, its potential status as a major performance arts company, and succession of artistic and production  executives.

For Australia, Chunky Move is much more than a leading dance group. It represents the edgy, mixed media culture Melbourne is creating to redefine the national identity – at home and overseas.

Challenge

In December 2009, Ellis Jones was commissioned to facilitate board strategic planning and provide advice in response on engagement with key stakeholders. We worked with board members to set a vision for operational growth, artistic development, succession and stakeholder engagement.

Response

  • Strategic advice to the executive producer.
  • Facilitation of a board planning workshop.
  • Articulation of the company vision in key success areas.
  • Preparation of a report and guidance in its application.

Outcome

The results of our work with Chunky Move were presented in a report which is central to the company’s negotiations with its government partners. The report is also guiding decisions relating to touring and delivery models.

We were fortunate to have Rhod Ellis-Jones as our facilitator, he provided an educated, supportive and balanced approach. He helped our Executive and Board in all areas of discussion and planning regarding the strategic future of our organisation. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Rhod Ellis-Jones has since been appointed to the Chunky Move Board.
